Since the XDP-4000x doesnt decode Dolby can the optic out still be used? if it is do I still hook up the audio RCA's on the XA-118 or just the digital cable?

On the DVX-100? No, unfortunately it cannot. The reason being the

"pin"/signal that sets the analog/digital out bit for the *UniLink*
architecture is probably permanently set to analog in the XA-118. The only
way you'd be able to use the digital out would be to hardware mod the XA-118
to make it tell the XDP it's in digital out mode; then, use the DVX-100s
optical out, setting it to PCM output only.

Any more info on this?

I also have a dvx-100 with xa-118 adapter. I also have a cdx-c90 with xdp-210eq and wanted to know if it was something relitively easy to modify to use the optical out on the dvx-100 to be recognized by the xdp-210eq.

My soldering skills are poor by the way. Only solder engine wire harness etc. Nothing small and delicate.

It wouldn't be something easy to modify...

Over UniLink the changer will specify what output mode it is in (digital or analog); going by that the XDP will "expect" a corresponding signal. CD Changers that have digital outputs have a switch for digital or analog mode C and this is how the flag gets set in the UniLink protocol. Changers without a digital output (or without a switch like the DVD changer) are permanently set to analog mode. Unless the digital out flag is set in the changer protocol the XDP will not accept a digital input.

So what you would have to do is find the IC on the board of the changer that has the digital output bit (use theservice manual)and "pull" that signal "high" or "low" (depending on what it has to be) in order to set digital output mode. It should be possible but no it's obviously not easy.

There is also a second problem though... That is the fact that the XDP-210EQ cannot decode Dolby Digital or DTS.The changerwill have to be set to output PCMwhich would at least get you stereo audio in the digital domain. Note that DTS would not work like this C however C as I'm pretty sure the DVD changer did not have a DTS decoder in it. (It doesn't have a full DD decoder either but all DVD players are required to be able to downmix DD multi-channel to 2ch C so that would work via PCM as long as you can set the output as such.)
