Anyone using an electric winch to assist in moving RV10 into a hangar? If so what have your experiences been? where to attach the line? etc.

Yes. Harbor Freight 12V remote controlled winch attached to floor of

hangar, used to pull plane in tail-first.  Started out using a rope bridle

attached to both steps close to the fuselage penetrations, but later found

the tail tie down ring adequate for pulling it up a mild grade and on a

level floor.  Using a tow bar to steer the nosewheel while this is going on

I have also used the harbor freight winch for this, when it's too     icy for a tug or pushing the plane in.

     I got the 120V winch, and strapped a couple steel straps to it to     form a "V".  I cut a 1'x1' square out

     of my hangar floor, and dug it a foot deep, and embedded a large     turnbuckle with an eyelit into it,

     and concreted it in.  Now I have a removable floor eyelet that I can     bolt that tip of the V to.

     I extend the cable with a rope, so I can start outside the hangar.       You can use the built in

     winch control, but I built an arduino-ish based controller that I     can run from my iphone to

     extend and retract the winch in incremental amounts.  Like 10     seconds, or 2 seconds or a few

     variations.   That allows me to have it go a short distance and stop     in case something is 

     getting out of whack before I hit the hangar.   I attach to the tail     tiedown which is plenty strong

     for a rolling load like this if you keep the area shoveled.  I steer     with the towbar. 

     

     It would be pretty easy to cut and extend the control cable if you     needed.  

     

     Actually, to be more precise, I'm not using a winch but a hoist.  It     is like this:

     I didn't want to deal with batteries for something I rarely need.

         I typically push the plane in backwards by the prop blade           roots and using the Bogart bar, but at times if it's too           slippery or I'm feeling my age, I drag out the winch and do it           the slow but easy way.
