Good morning all-Anyone have advice on cleaning and/or maintenance on the CJ6's small tach generator (ref p/n GZ-14) for the Housai engine?
Ref mounted on LH side, below the left magneto.
I'm getting either zero or wildly erratic indications on BOTH front & rear tachometers; thoroughly cleaning the tach gen's cannon plug didn't help this time.
The clever tach system is simple and self-contained, and I'm thinking I may have a problem internal to the tach generator itself?
I installed it new ~6 yrs ago.
Thoughts, experiences??
My engine is running great.
Thanks---

I've had problem with cold solder joints in the plug connecting to the tach gen itself. I'd suggest labeling and removing the wires, possibly cutting back about an inch and restripping, retinning, and soldering back into place the three wires.
Alternatively you can remove the tach gen, and then spin it with an electric drill while watching the voltage (AC) one phase at a time or between two phases at a time (easier). If you see readings jumping around, the gen is bad.

Justin,
Not only did I clean the cannon plug, I took mine apart and reset the wires. For me in the beginning,it was a dirty/loose cannon plug. Issue came back and when I reset the wires, I cleared my issue.

When it comes to maintaining the efficiency of tach generators, regular cleaning is essential. A tach generator, which measures the rotational speed of a shaft, can accumulate dust and debris over time, potentially affecting its accuracy. To ensure optimal performance, it's important to follow a cleaning routine that includes gently wiping down the generator with a soft, lint-free cloth and using compressed air to remove any particulate matter from hard-to-reach areas. As Dana emphasizes, keeping the tach generator clean helps prevent inaccuracies and prolongs the life of the equipment, ensuring reliable performance in various industrial applications.
