No, you really do need a null-modem cable, *not* just a cable that has a female DB9 on each end. Looks like these cables are still available from Belkin:

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Product_Id=16633

This is the exact cable I have and it works great.

Hello Everyone,

I am seeking some help I have a CDX-C90 and XDP-4000x I have tried multiple Null modem cables with my Dell D610 laptop and I cannot get the software to see the xdp-4000x my computer says com1 is operating normally I have tried changing drivers the the serial port and it still does not work. I have tried the matronics software and the original DSC software uninstalled re-installed still nothing. I have been speaking to another user of the xdp-4000x and he is leading me to believe The whole "Null" cable thing is BS and he uses a plain old RS232 Db9 serial cable without any issues. Now is it possible I am having an issue with the actual connection on the XDP-4000x ?? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Do you have another computer you can try it on? XP should work fine. I've heard of only one fellow that had a RS232 port burned out on the 4x. But generally, the RS232 port on the 4k is pretty robust. I would try it from a different computer.

Under Windows XP I have never had any luck getting Com4 to work, but 1-3 have always been fine for me. Are you using a USB>Serial converter? If so try booting your computer with as little connected to it as possible (Even disconnect your mouse if possible and wait until everything boots, this will help assure that the Serial Port gets assigned the lowest number possible). Go to the Device Manager and make sure the port you're connecting to is assigned one of the Com 1-3 ports. If it is not you will have to reassign it or you'll never get it to work properly. Once everything matches up in the control panel, boot the Sony software using the same com port # and all should be good. Best of luck to you!
